On the south wall of the chancel is a memorial to Shute Barrington, b.1734 – d.1826

IN A VAULT BENEATH THIS STONE LIE THE BODIES OF THE [HON] &[R] REVEREND SHUTE BARRINGTON
LORD BISHOP OF DURHAM AND OF JANE HIS WIFE

This is a raised vault rather than a ledgerstone but as it is exposed to the elements in the now roofless nave and commemorates Shute Barrington who partly rebuilt the church in 1791 it is perhaps, worth recording.
Ref. TCCT guide 2006

The TCCT guide refers to a monument on the south wall of the chancel to Jane Barrington his mother but according to www.peerage.com Shute Barrington’s mother was Anne Daines, his second wife was Jane.
