Recorded Ledgerstones

Langport, All Saints’ : Ledgerstone 1

Mary Alsop †1727, 01, has the basic pattern but the arch is elliptical and has not been completed in detail. Was the stone too long for its place and had to be truncated? In any case the sides have been trimmed.

Langport, All Saints’ : Ledgerstone 2

The earliest, 02, Thomazen Budd †1680, has plinths, columns, rather simple capitals made up of slabs, and a semicircular arch with a kind of egg-and-dart ornament on the lower surface. Little spikes bearing pennants flank the arch. This continues with variations.

The next in date, 03, wife of John Bush †1699, under the lectern unfortunately, has the same basic pattern with some additional ornament including an angel at the crown of the arch. The spikes have disappeared.

Langport, All Saints’ : Ledgerstone 4

Elaborate carving. A somewhat similar pattern is on 04, Henry Harl †1749.

Langport, All Saints’ : Ledgerstone 5

John Bishopp, 05, has lost his date of death because of delamination of the stone. The presence of a spike flanking the arch may suggest a 17th century date.

Langport, All Saints’ : Ledgerstone 8

08, George Stuckey †1726 was presumably of the prominent local family of that name, who could afford the elaborate carving.

Langport, All Saints’ : Ledgerstone 9

09, Thomas Atway †1681, is almost identical to 02 except that there is (very unusually) a triple arch.
