Stone has incised border edge and shows ‘Tree of Life’ centrally situated along its length above a jointed square base on a stepped rectangle. The letters ‘IHS’ are centrally placed within the tree’s branches and incised inscriptions are either side of its trunk (see photograph).

Condition good at top, poor at bottom and covered by altar step

Bevelled right edge consists of stripes incised in a ribbed pattern. A ‘Tree of Life’ with the letters ‘IHS’ centrally inscribed runs most of the length. Beneath the branches are: on its left a partial inscription; on its right another inscription above a maker’s mark and image of a standing person (see photograph). An earlier inscription, probably originally centrally located, is below towards the bottom of the stone.

Elaborate floor slab with marginal inscription and small Alsée Patée crosses inside rope-bordered circles at each corner. In the centre is a large brass circle, bordered with a rope design, overlaid by a large Alisée Patée cross. There is an endless rope knot design in each arm of the cross. In the centre of the central cross is a chevron-bordered circle containing five smaller circles: one in the middle and four outer: n, s, e and west. Damaged/worn engravings in the middle of each are illegible. The outer circle contains 4 Trefoil shaped decorations between the arms of the cross.
Gothic script
Condition very good with evidence of wear on marginal inscription and central circles.

Both inscriptions describing John Philips and Phillip Phillips as ‘dyers’ provide evidence of local textile-making.
By the 1830s the Welsh woollen industry was in a state of decline and it is argued that one of Lady Llanover’s motives in promoting the wearing of Welsh national costume was to encourage the Welsh woollen industry. (ref a)
A woollen mill was built at the request of Lady Llanover: ‘mainly to make textiles for the workers on the estate… by 1890 … the mill was run by Lady Llanover herself’ (ref b)
